By Athena Hessong Updated September 26, Installing a wood-burning stove in your home creates a more efficient heat source than a fireplace. The construction of woodstoves involves specific requirements that are absent in fireplaces and other heating devices. The stove pipe from the stove to the chimney must be at a certain angle for the stove to work properly and to avoid a dangerous situation in your home. Stove Pipes and Woodstoves Woodstoves have a pipe to bring smoke to the chimney.
Stove pipes carry away the smoke and byproducts from burning wood in the stove. The pipe also provides oxygen for the stove so the wood inside can burn. Pipes should be as short as possible to reach the chimney, because long pipe lengths can decrease the amount of air getting to the fire in the stove and hamper ventilation of smoke. Single-Wall Stove Pipes Single-wall stove pipes have one layer of metal around the pipe. When using these, the code requires at least 18 inches between the pipe and the ceiling, according to “Code Check Complete: Once the pipe reaches a wall or ceiling, a thicker, more insulated pipe needs to be used to prevent a fire in the wall from the heat of the stove pipe.
Why Angle Matters You should never install a completely horizontal stove pipe. If your pipe is flat, creosote can build up inside.
The plenum, which is essentially the heat distribution box, is located on top of the furnace. Therefore, to make this task practical, the wood stove must be located adjacent to the furnace so that the fan can supply the plenum with heated air. In all other areas where the wood stove is located, it would be an impracticable endeavor to hook into the central heating ducts and expect even a minimum of heat at the registers.
This will mark the top of your starting collar.
The whole process of buying was simple and straightforward.
Can’t find a solution to your problem? Post a question in our Forums. Woodburning furnace and chimney My husband and I are planning to install a woodburning furnace and new chimney any suggestions would be helpful. We have a two story home and want to know should the chimney go inside or out. We have never built one so a step by step would be helpful. I feel that any woodburning chimney should be built inside.
This keeps the chimney warmer and slows the build up of creosote in the liner of the chimney. Your local building inspector should have a diagram for the construction of the chimney with all clearances needed. My question is could I get one of those cheaper styles box type wood burning stoves and somehow put it on a piece of sheet metal or the like to prevent the carpet in front of the fireplace and hook up an elbow type of flue to go up and connect to my fireplace chimney flue?
Would all work all right as far as drafts, etc.? If so, yes it would probably work. Don’t just get any piece of sheetmetal for the floor.

Always make sure that your building permits these stoves to be built in your home.
If you are not sure about installation procedures of such stoves, consult a professional. This type of heating device it safe when used properly but can be very dangerous if used otherwise.

WisperLite Universal Multi Fuel Stove Isobutane canister fuel is a delight to use on the trail as it lights up easily while requiring minimal stove maintenance. Unfortunately this gas fuel does poorly below freezing temperatures, which is when you need your stove the most. There are ways of extending the usability of this fuel at subfreezing temperatures, such as inverting the canister which delivers liquid fuel to your stove instead of fuel vapors.
It has also been tested by a reputable company from a country regulated by liability lawyers, so most feel that this system and approach is “safe” for the average consumer. Other methods of extending the operating range of gas fuels in subfreezing temperatures such as using a bicycle tire pump to pressurize your canister are likely beyond what the “average consumer” would consider safe or reasonable.
